Behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had the second-best domestic opening weekend of 2022, but like the previous Marvel films, it had weak legs and finished third-worst of the top 10. Nevertheless, it was nevertheless able to rank as the second-highest earning film of 2022.

3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
On May 6, 2022, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was published, earning $187.4 million in its first weekend. It made a total of $411.3 million after a 67 percent decline in second weekend box office. Since Spider-Man: No Way Home's opening weekend was in December 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has the highest domestic opening weekend in 2022, despite Spider-Man: No Way Home earning $260 million in its first weekend. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had a solid start, but its second-weekend decline of 67 percent is the second worst among the top 10. (behind Thor: Love and Thunder).

4. Jurassic World: Dominion
On June 10, 2022, Jurassic World: Dominion was launched, earning $145 million in its first weekend. It went on to make a total of $376 million in revenue despite a 59.2 percent dip in its second weekend's box office. Jurassic World: Dominion had the third-best domestic opening weekend in 2022, but average legs (a total box office run of 59.2 percent, which is slightly over normal), put it in fourth place domestically.

5. Minions: The Rise of Gru
On July 1, 2022, Minions: The Rise of Gru was released, earning $107 million in its first weekend. It made a total of $369.5 million after a second weekend box office decline of 56.9%. Minions: The Rise of Gru had the second-lowest opening weekend box office of the top 10, but it had the third-best second-weekend drop (after Top Gun: Maverick and The Batman) thanks to its strong legs, which helped it climb to the fifth-highest grossing position of the year.

The Batman debuted on Mar. 4, 2022, to a $134 million opening weekend take. It went on to earn a total of $369.3 million in revenue despite a 50.4 percent decline in its second weekend box office. Although it is just below Avatar: The Way of Water's $134.1 million debut, The Batman's opening weekend is the fourth-lowest of the top 10 movies of 2022. The Batman's success at the box office can be ascribed to its somewhat strong legs; while the film's second-weekend decline of 50.4 percent was the second-lowest among the top 10 films, it was still 21 points higher than that of Top Gun: Maverick.

7. Thor: Love and Thunder
On July 8, 2022, Thor: Love and Thunder was released, earning $144.2 million in its first weekend. Its second weekend box office fell by 67.7%, and it ended up earning a total domestic revenue of $343.3. Thor: Love and Thunder's second weekend box office dropped by 67.7 percent, more than any other movie in the top 10 and by almost 10 points more than the 67.8 percent average, despite having the fifth-highest opening weekend domestically.

8. Spider-Man: No Way Home
On December 17, 2022, Spider-Man: No Way Home was released, earning $260.1 million in its first weekend. Its second weekend box office fell by 67.5 percent, and it ended up making a total domestic box office revenue of $804.8. Despite not having a 2022 release date, it made $231.8 million of its total domestic revenue during the year 2022, making it the seventh highest grossing film of the year.

9. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
On April 8, 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was launched, earning $72.1 million in its first weekend. It made a total domestic box office revenue of $190.9 million after seeing a 59.4% reduction in its second weekend attendance. Its domestic opening weekend performance was the weakest of any of the top 10 films, and its second weekend decline was a little bit greater than the top 10 average of 57.81%, but it still managed to finish in ninth place (although Avatar: The Way of Water is sure to pass it before the end of December).

10. Avatar: The Way of Water
On Dec. 16, 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water was released, earning $134.1 million in its first weekend. Avatar: The Way of Water hasn't finished its second weekend as of the time of writing, so it's unclear how much of a drop-off it will experience. However, if it behaves like James Cameron's previous two films, its box office performance won't act like typical blockbusters, and it'll earn the majority of its money in the long run. The sixth-largest opening weekend of any film in 2022 is Avatar: The Way of Water, which had the biggest opening weekend of any James Cameron production. It's too soon to forecast the movie's performance, but as of this writing, with $183 million, it has the tenth-highest domestic box office debut of 2022.
