The new beauty queen was not even on the list of predicted finalists. However, she conquered the jury and won the victory among the 84 contestants who attended the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

She is also the first Filipino-American woman to win the contest, ahead of Venezuela's Amanda Dudamel and the Dominican Republic's Andreina Martinez.

Who is R'Bonney Gabriel?

Gabriel was born in Houston in 1994. She is a model, fashion designer and sewing instructor, but focused on environmental care. Before the contest, she donned an orange-red cape inspired by a phoenix, which she dyed herself: "if not now, then when". She later explained that this was a way of assimilating her father's advice to act on her dreams.

In fact, in an attempt to empower the women who follow her on her social networks, she has shared a series of photographs on her Instagram account where she appears with her face washed, without makeup, to show her natural beauty.

R'Bonney has pointed out that she takes care of her skin with hydrafacial treatments, to do a deep cleansing of her facial skin to keep it clean and fresh. In addition, she accompanied them with others where she shows part of her work in fashion design.

One of the elements that helped R'Bonney win the pageant was her answer in the question session, when she was asked how she would work to show that Miss Universe is an empowering and progressive organization. She responded that, "I would use the platform to be a transformational leader" and spoke of her passion for reducing pollution and using recycled materials in garment making:

"I teach sewing classes to women who have survived human trafficking and domestic violence. And I say that because it's so important to invest in others, invest in our community and use your unique talents to make a difference," Gabriel said.
