“I had another brand with a partner called Rosemilk, which was a huge success, so when we closed it, I already knew I wanted to start something of my own,” explains the designer. “I didn’t have a choice, either. After 10 years as a styling assistant, making very little money, I needed the brand to be a success, or I wouldn’t have enough money to survive.”

So how does he describe his signature aesthetic? “Mirror Palais is a mix of Edwardian and Victorian fashion, but also the minimalism and clean lines of the ’90s,” says Gaia. “We put a lot of heart into what we do – love is a big part of the brand ethos.” Whether in the form of underwire polo tops (Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa are fans), its glittery, bestselling Fairy Dress, or high-cut bikinis inspired by Gaia’s Brazilian heritage, Mirror Palais has a flair for capturing the zeitgeist and understanding how to create form-fitting garments that flatter all body types. Plus, the brand is a pioneer in eco-conscious practices thanks to its “pre-order only” business model.

Collection IV, its most recent release, incorporates baroque details. Silk, chiffon, charmeuse and lace, among other fabrics, have been used to construct the garments, while deep neutral tones with a dash of bordeaux comprise the colour palette. “The inspiration is within the name of the collection – The Princess, The Siren and The Virgin – as all three are figures present in history and fairy tales that have inspired me,” says Gaia. “Our favourite piece is the Ruffle Tunnel Gown, a silk number with 13 adjustable tiers and drawstrings that can be used to create a custom fit on the body.”

Who else would Gaia like to see wearing his creations? “It’s always special when I see anyone in my clothes, even if they’re not famous,” he says enthusiastically. “But I’d like to work with Rihanna, Zoë Kravitz and Lily-Rose Depp – I love how mysterious they are.”
