The British fashion designer, who passed away in December 2022 at the age of 81, began her career in the early 1970s with Malcolm McLaren, her business and love partner. The pair, who had a kid together named Joseph Corré, started a rock-inspired clothes store in London in 1971 where they sold retro styles, punk-rock T-shirts, and other items. Westwood and McLaren presented their first fashion presentation in 1981. She started working as a freelance designer two years later.
Westwood developed her designs while working alone, including the famed "mini-crini," a contemporary short skirt linked to a Victorian-era skirt. She also designed other things like red carpet gowns and pantsuits.
In the first Sex and the City movie, Sarah Jessica Parker donned the expensive wedding dress that the environmentalist famously created for Carrie Bradshaw. The legendary outfit featured a strapless neckline and a dramatic A-line skirt.
Westwood was the expert in extravagant designs. SZA attracted attention in one of her looks at the 2022 Met Gala when she appeared in a magenta strapless gown. Her latex stockings and stiletto heels were visible thanks to the thigh-high split that ended the A-line dress. The Missouri native completed the ensemble with matching latex gloves and a big black hat.
