What to expect from the plot of Bridgerton Season 3

The beloved historical-romance drama Bridgerton is set to return on Netflix with its third season. After the stunning conclusion of the second season, fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment, which will focus on Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan. Bridgerton Season 3  will follow the love story between Penelope and Colin.

Bridgerton Season 3 is currently in production. After the long hiatus between seasons 1 and 2, fans are hoping for a faster turnaround for the third season. Currently, the series is in the process of filming and a release date has not been confirmed.

Bridgerton Season 2 ended with several cliffhangers. Eloise Bridgerton (played by Claudia Jessie) and Penelope Featherington's (played by Nicola Coughlan) friendship was strained after Eloise discovered that Penelope was behind a gossip column about the scandals in her family. Meanwhile, both Eloise's relationship with Theo and Penelope's crush on Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) hit a rough patch.

However, fans may see a happy ending for Viscount Anthony (played by Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (played by Simone Ashley) who found love despite their rocky start. It has been confirmed that their love story will continue in Season 3, along with the developing romance between Penelope and Colin. However, not all the cast members from the first two seasons will return.

The announcement of Phoebe Dynevor's departure from Bridgerton came as a shock to fans of the show. Dynevor, who played Daphne Bridgerton in the first two seasons, revealed in January that she would not be returning for Season 3.

In an interview with Variety, she explained that she had accomplished what she wanted to do with the character and that she had a satisfying arc. However, she also stated that if she were asked to return in the future, she would consider it. Dynevor said to ScreenRant that she was looking forward to watching the show as a viewer.

The announcement that Phoebe Dynevor will not be returning for Bridgerton Season 3 came as a shock to fans of the show. Even though Regé-Jean Page, who played her love interest in the first season, also didn't return, the news still had a significant impact as it marked the end of the characters who began the story. Despite this, fans are still eagerly anticipating how the storyline will unfold in the upcoming season.

The season will be different from the previous two seasons as it will not have Phoebe Dynevor who played Daphne. Instead, it will be based on the book "Romancing Mister Bridgerton." There will be romantic scenes in the new season, and some of them might be considered racy. This has made actress Nicola Coughlan worried and she is thinking of asking for a special version for her family to watch.

In an interview with ExtraTV (via CheatSheet), Nicola Coughlan opened up about the characters in bedroom scenes.

The interviewer questioned, “Season 1 was full of lots of contacts, Season 2 was more romance. Does this mean we go back to Season 1 for Season 3?”

“I think yeah,” said Coughlan. “We’ve already had two seasons of build-up.”

The actor is referring to the two previous seasons, where viewers have seen Penelope pine after Colin, who is her childhood friend. I’ve known for quite some time — known for over a year, actually,” Coughlan explained of the upcoming storyline featuring her Colin (played by Luke Newton).

“So … when Jess Barnell, who’s our incoming showrunner, she said, ‘You know, we’ve seen them with this build-up for two seasons, so it felt like the right time.’”

“But he’s your dear friend, he’s your buddy,” the interviewer shot back. “Is it going to be weird [to shoot the sex scenes]?” Coughlan laughed, “Probably!”

Here's the official logline of Bridgerton Season 3 released by Netflix:

"From Shondaland and new showrunner Jess Brownell, Bridgerton is back for its third season and finds Penelope Featherington has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin Bridgerton after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it's time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence, Penelope's attempts on the marriage mart fail spectacularly.

"Meanwhile, Colin has returned from his summer travels with a new look and a serious sense of swagger. But he's disheartened to realize that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly. Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise, who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope's growing presence in the ton makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret."
